چکیده

Processing of self-assembled magnetic nanocrystals has vitally scientific and technological interests. In this paper, three different kinds of self-assemblies of cobalt nanocrystals were processed using particles processed by thermal decomposition of cobalt carbonyl in toluene. In case 1, two-dimensional self-assembly of cobalt nanocrystals with an average particle size of 9.2 nm and polydispersity of 9% has been formed. In case 2, macroscopic whisker structures composed of self assembled cobalt nanocrystals (with an average size of 8 nm) were formed during the thermal decomposition under an externally applied magnetic field. The whiskers can be aligned in the longitudinal axis direction during drying using an external magnetic field. In case 3, one-dimensionally ordered, densely packed self-assemblies have also been prepared using cobalt nanocrystals with irregular shape and larger particle sizes (10–20 nm). The formation of these different structures is attributed to the magnetic properties of cobalt particles with different sizes. ©1999 Acta Metallurgica Inc.

Controlled self-assembly of colloidal cobalt nanocrystals mediated by magnetic interactions

We demonstrate the possibility of obtaining a rich set of self-assembled arrays from a single component cobalt nanocrystal (NC) system by a controlled variation of size, shape and inter-particle interactions. By selecting appropriate conditions in which one of a set of weak but competing interaction forces (steric, van der Waals, depletion, or magnetostatic) dominates we can reproducibly achiev...

Synthesis, Structural Order and Magnetic Behavior of Self-Assembled "-Co Nanocrystal Arrays

The synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles with monodispere size distributions, their self assembly into ordered arrays and their magnetic behavior as a function of structural order (ferrofluids and 2D assemblies) are presented. Magnetic colloids of monodispersed, passivated, cobalt nanocrystals were produced by the rapid pyrolysis of cobalt carbonyl in solution. The size, size distribution (std. ...

Step-mediated size selection and ordering of heteroepitaxial nanocrystals

It is necessary to control the size, shape, and uniformity of self-assembled and self-organized nanocrystals in order to use them in real devices. The way to achieve this in epitaxial nanocrystal arrays is by manipulating the bulk stress and/or the surface stress. In this work, an additional and fundamentally different mechanism of CoSi2 nanocrystal size selection is reported, based on a prefer...

Charge storage in a metal–oxide–semiconductor capacitor containing cobalt nanocrystals

Self-assembled cobalt (Co) nanocrystals on ultra-thin silicon dioxide layer were fabricated by in situ annealing Co ultrathin films deposited with Co effusion cell in a molecular-beam-epitaxy chamber. The resultant nanocrystals obtained at the optimized annealing temperature are around 3–4 nm in diameter with dot density of about 1 · 10 cm . The metal–oxide–semiconductor capacitors containing C...

Self-assembled metal–semiconductor compound nanocrystals on Group IV semiconductor surfaces

Nanocrystals of material B may form on a substrate of material A in order to relieve the strain from the B/A crystalline mismatch. In the most simplistic approximation, if such an elastic relaxation outweighs the additional surface energy due to the island walls, it will create the thermodynamic tendency for the nanocrystal formation. Hence one can ‘engineer’ ultra-small and crystallographicall...
